About this project

Dr. Cowan’s Garden is a line of functional spices using vegetables grown on small, organic and biodynamic farms, as well as from foragers of wild vegetables. Our products make it possible for you to easily increase your vegetable intake - enjoying all the benefits of their vitamins, minerals, and a variety of phytochemicals - simply by adding our powders to your food.

Vegetables play a critical role in the human diet. In fact, taking our lead from healthy traditional peoples, we should strive to eat at least 10 to 12 different plants a day. The problem is it's challenging - and time-consuming - to prepare and eat the amount and variety of vegetables we should be eating on a daily basis.

Dr. Cowan's Garden was created to solve this problem.

Why Crowdfunding?

After two years in business, we have validated our concept and have many loyal customers and fans in all 50 states! But we want to go further. We recognize the importance of making biodiversity more accessible and affordable for the average consumer, so we're looking for help in taking our business to the next level. We want to expand into retail stores everywhere so more people can enjoy our products.

In return for your contribution we are offering many exciting gifts - including newly released products exclusive to this campaign, a chance to join our R&D team and even an opportunity to spend the day with Dr. Cowan at the garden in Napa.

Product Uses

  • Easily increase your vegetable intake! These powders act as a functional spice and can be sprinkled on any dish to enhance the flavor and increase the nutritional potency
  • Busy parents can add vegetables to foods that their children will eat - good-bye food fights!
  • Foodies can add an arsenal of new flavors to their food

Why Are Vegetables Important?

Roots (carrots, beets), leaves (kale, chard), and fruits (tomatoes, peppers) should be eaten every day. Eating different plant parts and colors is the surest way to avail ourselves of all the nutrients plants have to offer.

They have an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and a variety of phytochemicals. Unlike animals, plants are stationary and use chemistry to defend themselves against predators and disease. These chemicals provide the vitamins, antioxidants and other healing and disease-fighting properties for humans.

Dr. Cowan’s Garden has created powders out of all of these vegetables making it easy for you to consume these nutrients on a daily basis.

Supporting Organic and Biodynamic Farmers

By supporting us, you're supporting small organic and biodynamic farmers as well as wild food foragers by creating a broader marketplace for their produce. Through us, a wild ramp forager in West Virginia can sell his ramps to foodies across the country!

Asher Cowan
Cofounder and CEO

Food has always been a big part of my life. Growing up in a house with a holistic/natural medicine doctor meant that the food we ate was very healthy. We were eating organic fruits and vegetables long before they became the trend, and I can remember my dad brewing kombucha in the coat closet stinking up the entire house. Like most youngsters, I rebelled against this way of eating – I didn’t understand the connection between food and health, and would constantly complain about having to eat my vegetables.

As I grew up, so did my taste in food. By the time I reached college, I had begun to appreciate the food choices that my parents had made for me and started to seek out healthier alternatives for myself. I started cooking more and more and went on to co-found a café while in school for my MBA at Clark University in Worcester, MA. I soon realized that the long hours and late nights of the restaurant business were not for me, and spent the next six years working as a consultant and financial analyst before the entrepreneurial bug caught me again. This time, it was my dad’s idea of making and selling vegetable powders to the patients in his practice.

Starting and growing a food business has allowed me to marry my passion for food, entrepreneurship, and health. I now have a family of my own, and thanks to our vegetable powders, I don’t fight with my children about eating their veggies!!

Root Medley Blend details:
The nutrients in the root — all that sweetness, juiciness, flavor, and nutrition that we love so much in our root vegetables — are the basis for the plant’s immortality. And like all living beings, the fun of life is the chance to be artistic and creative. Any plant can make a bland, dirt-colored root with a few nutrients in it. But plants can’t resist being creative. Parsnips focus their creativity on producing sugars to create that characteristic parsnip sweetness. Celeriac “chooses” to put substances in its root that turn it slightly green and that are used by the animals that eat them to cleanse their kidneys and reduce their blood pressure. Perhaps rutabagas put a kick in their root as a playful gesture to mimic a rare spice. Eaten together, these roots demonstrate the creativity and ability of plants to nourish us in more ways than just being a source of this or that nutrient.

We felt inspired to bring these creative roots together in our new Root Medley Blend, not only to reap the health benefits of these often hard-to-get vegetables on a daily basis but also to celebrate the playfulness of plants. The blend can be mixed with any savory food to add the unique boost of nutrition and flavor that roots provide.

Ashitaba Description:

Our ashitaba is grown in our Napa garden as well as at a small biodynamic farm not far from us. As far as we know, we are the only company selling domestic, biodynamically grown ashitaba.

Ashitaba is perhaps one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables on the planet, containing more Vitamin B6 and B12 than your typical green vegetable. Truly, everyone – especially anyone with a health challenge – should be eating this plant! Studies show that it boosts the immune system, is diuretic, enhances stomach and intestine functions, and has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. It also contains rich stores of potassium and manganese, which help ease diabetes, and it stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF), which is a protein that maintains the health connection between neurons and the brain.

It even has the power to rejuvenate your body’s cell properties, and many people claim they look younger after regular consumption of ashitaba.

Garden tours will include a gift basket of some of our most popular items (full description below) as well as signed books written by Dr. Cowan!
